In the early morning of January 13, 2013, I was in my Penn State office because I couldn’t sleep. I had been there all night. I couldn’t figure out how to get Rita my new number, and I didn’t know her attorney. In an Effexor-induced manic and increasingly panicked state, I thought if I sent Rita an innocuous text message, she would realize it was from me and have my number. Thus, I sent her a period (.). I figured the worst that could happen was getting arrested again and getting time added to my probation. I was hoping that Rita would not report it. Again, I was incredibly naive.
Not long later, still in my office, I started getting calls from “blocked” numbers and assumed it was the police. I again panicked and decided to return the phone later that morning, which was a dumb thing to do in hindsight. Completely exhausted and hoping the police wouldn’t be able to link the phone to me, I went to my apartment and finally crashed after being awake for about 48 straight hours. I was awoken later that day by the police knocking at the door. Completely disoriented, I gave them the new phone. They looked for the message but didn’t find it. They asked me if I deleted it, and I told them I had not. When they asked if I had sent the message, I told them I had, but I returned the phone and got the one they had now. They arrested me, handcuffed me, and took me back to jail. The arrest warrant, requested by officer Morrison, is contained in the image gallery.
